Writing an effective cover letter

A cover letter is an introduction to your resume and it allows you an opportunity to highlight your experience and qualifications. The following are ideas to keep in mind when preparing your cover letter.


  1. It should be tailored to the position you are applying for
  2. It should be no more than one page


Ideally it should consist of:


  • An introductory paragraph
  • A few body paragraphs (one to three maximum) and
  • A closing paragraph
  • Use a clear typeface
  • Ensure you write formally, positively and concisely
  • Avoid using excessive words
  • Always check you spelling and grammar, do not rely on spell check
  • Ensure you proofread your letter
